Who Shot JR?

“Mr. Sewell Newhouse began making steel traps in 1823 in Oneida County, New York. His hand-forged products were superior; during a quarter of a century of Newhouse blacksmithing, they built a good reputation for their maker and stirred widespread demand. In the 1840’s Mr. Newhouse joined the Oneida Community, where he and a few assistants continued in the manufacture of hand-forged traps. Within a few years ingenious machines were invented at Oneida, whick took over some of the work that heretofore had always been done by hand. Within a decade after the arrival of Newhouse most of the trap manufacture at Oneida was handled by machines, and production was enormous. The best grade of traps made by the Oneida Community retained the trade name “Newhouse”. For more than a hundred years the name has stood for the best in steel traps - something of an institutional monument to one country blacksmith”. (p.382)
